I am looking to purchase a tv, the one I have now is old. I understand they are phasing out tube tv’s, even the flat CRT, and am looking at an LCD, I have been doing research and the cheaper ones seem to have everything the more expensive ones have, i.e. : contrast ratio, response time and resolution. I am veering towards the Sharp Aquos or the Sony Bravea, but am wondering if the more generic ones like Westinghouse and Olevia are just as good, for less money. Any suggestions?
Drop by a local Target and check out the Olevia… I’m buying a small LCD TV for my dorm room, and I have to say, I’m really liking the Olevia, it looks pretty sharp and the picture quality is just as good as the Sony LCD HDTV my parents have at home (which is waaay more expensive)…
If you’re really, really into your technology, I guess you could go for the Sony or Sharp… but I think Olevia is just as good, it all depends on your needs.
As far as the LCD is concerned, YES they are the same. There are just a few manufacturer of those. SO its preety Standard stuff.
The difference comes in how the colors are processed and how fast. The power and intensity of colors.
Best thing sto do is, go and watch as many as you can from cheap ones to the more expensive ones. And pick one you like.
One thing I would reccomend is add a good sound system if you are looking at a big screen.
You may want to look at DLP projection TV. More bang for the buck
The best brand of the “lower class” is by far Vizio. Amazing picture quality, sound, etc. They are about half the price of sony’s and samsungs are are nearly just as good.
If you didn’t know already, many of the lcd hdtvs are made in the same factories. There are just a few specifications that are different. Really, Vizio is the best tv for the money that it costs. Go online to buy.com or other electronic stores and read reviews submitted by people who bought the product. They are great. I am about to purchase a second one (32 vxl). Trust me, its well worth the buy.
The cheaper TVs will have the same outputs and such but will be different. The parts used on the more expensive TVs such as Samsung or Sharp are of a higher quality and are more durable giving you less grief in the future when something on the cheaper TVs is likely to malfunction or break.
As far as contrast ratio, that is somewhat of a fabricated spec as it’s not figured in a uniform way and different companies measure this is many different ways. Most of the time you can see the difference if you play with the picture to what it should be and not go by the “out of the box” settings.
The Aquos and Bravia are both very good lines for you to be looking at.
Hey Jude, they let you down! Don’t pay any attention to the 1st 3 answers you got – they don’t have a clue what they are talking about.
If you want an LCD – without specifying a size or model, Sony is generally ranked as the best, but most expensive. IMO, best bang for the buck is currently Panasonic, Toshiba, and Hitachi. Stay away from the newer, unknown brands like Ilo, Vizio, and Olevia, as will as Phillips/Magnavox and RCA. Sharp makes a nice set, but they have been having some banding problems and don’t seem to be very sympathetic to their customers about fixing the problem under the warranty!
